INTRODUCTION

OSL is an entry level maintenance spare parts assessment tool designed to be used by the maintenance team to identify which spares should be held and in what quantities. OSL can be used to better manage maintenance spare parts especially slow moving and insurance spares and those parts subject to random demand.

CAUTION

A modern maintenance spare parts management system has many components that contribute to its overall effectiveness and no tool, used on its own will provide the best results. In practice, before the assessment of spares holding levels can even be considered several important components of modern Asset Management practice should be in place, namely:

  • A unique and comprehensive asset numbering system.
  • A comprehensive asset listing.
  • A comprehensive Criticality assessment of each asset.
  • A unique and consistent part numbering system.
  • An understanding of the supply chain of different parts.
  • An understanding of the costs of downtime.
  • An understanding of any penalty costs.
  • Etc.

Of these the Criticality deserves special mention. A comprehensive Criticality assessment is usually designed to meet the needs of the site and therefore a 'one size fits all' approach is not likely to be of much use. For this reason the assessment of Criticality is not covered by the software as it would by necessity require a single approach which is unlikely to meet the needs of the site.

If additional information is required on how best to conduct a 'multi-criteria' Criticality assessment please contact JAHCon for information on how we might be able to assist and for examples of similar work carried out for other clients.

GRAPHICAL OUTPUT

OSL Results can be graphed to provide a visual indication of the minimum cost option along with the various cost components used to generate the result. The plot provides an annual cost estimate of the competing cost factors for a range of holding options and a line is drawn between the points to aid visualisation.

DATA OUTPUT

Summary results are available in a quick view window and in a report format. While both displays can be printed the report format provides a better quality output. The report format also allows the data to be saved to a file.
