Criticality

Criticality Assessments allow the asset owner to establish a clear relationship between assets in such a way as to be able to identify the critical assets in the organisation and decide where to concentrate resources and effort.

The Criticality Assessment will be beneficial to the organisation if it impacts positively on decision making. In helping decide how best to respond to various situations the Criticality Ranking is a useful guide in establishing typical responses for various end-user scenarios. These response guidelines can be used to assist in communicating the role of the Criticality Assessments, ensure uniformity in response by different people across sites and between shifts and provide guidance to those responsible for making decisions in often stressful situations.

Different response scenarios may be needed by the following groups.

  • Operations.
  • Maintenance.
  • Safety officer.
  • Environmental officer.
  • Management.

Order priorities codes are used to indicate the response required to Notifications in modern CMMS. Criticality codes indicate the relative importance of each piece of equipment in the organisation.

When combined with Priority Codes, Criticality Codes allow a degree of automated scheduling/sorting by the CMMS as well as highlighting jobs by their relative importance. Decisions regarding after hours call-in’s, 'break-in' decisions, expediting spares and services etc. should be made on the basis of consideration of the combination of Priority and Criticality associated with each job.

The application of the criticality rankings includes:

  • Protecting the work schedule.
  • Prioritisation of routine work lists.
  • Backlog management.
  • Prioritisation of emergency repairs.
  • Guide on effective call-in policies.
  • Optimise spare parts holding.
  • Review of documents, spares, maintenance plans, etc.
  • Support ‘Training Needs Analysis’.
  • Shutdowns & Turnarounds.
  • Development of budgets.
